Jim is also starting the ball toss with his hand over the table which is illegal. Not sure how we can make it clearer in the video than to name it thought process and state at the start the videos are not about how to physically serve but you are right. Of interest, an ex Pro coached at our centre and was asked about this. His reply was in effect, push the service rule to the limit. It’s only an illegal serve if an umpire calls it such. Very few will or do.

I understand the rule in question and the intent to impart knowledge on the tactics of serving. However, I am sure that you appreciate that players of lesser ability tend to mimic players of greater ability. The whole interpretation of this service rule, I agree, is a cause for much debate. Having watched the video again – I stand by my view that the ball is clearly projected backward and certainly does not achieve 16cm in height.

Rule 2.06.02 The server shall then project the ball near vertically upwards, without imparting spin, so that it rises at least 16cm after leaving the palm of the free hand and then falls without touching anything before being struck.
These video’s have nothing to do with how to serve. They are about thinking about what you want to achieve with your serve tactically. Throwing the ball up almost vertical is open to wide interpretation at all levels of play and causes much debate in our league.

    good instruction – poor technique.
Watch the ball throw, backwards and lacking height.

Brilliant…the stuff about having to concentrate on where the ball bounces on your side of the table is absolutely dead right…but it’s the first time I’ve heard a table tennis coach point it out.
